The Problem
During the company's busiest and most time-compressed season, the logistics manager departed unexpectedly, leaving statewide coordination of inventory, issue resolution, and real-time decision-making without a lead at the worst possible moment.
The Context
As Operations Director at a large seasonal retailer, I supported more than 200 seasonal retail locations across Texas and Nevada, where the entire year hinges on two two-week sales seasons in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
The Analysis
The July 4th season leaves no room to rebuild from scratch. I focused on the two things that mattered most under pressure: keeping accurate inventory moving, and preventing the errors that compound fastest between fulfillment and delivery.
The Solution
I assumed leadership of the logistics department mid-season, coordinating statewide inventory movement and real-time problem-solving, and designed a quality-control verification process to improve order accuracy between fulfillment and delivery.
The Results
Reduced order errors by more than 98% while contributing to a record-breaking season that generated over $15 million in revenue (more than tripling the company's previous record) and sold through all available inventory before season's end.
Lessons Learned
Calm under pressure isn't a personality trait; it's the product of connecting the right people, information, and resources fast enough to matter.
